Canelo vs. Munguia: Weigh-In Results & The Possibility of an Upset for DAZN PPV

Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez weighed in at 166.8 lbs on Friday, while challenger Jaime Munguia weighed 167.4 lbs at the weigh-in for their main event clash this Saturday night on May 4th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas live on Amazon Prime and DAZN PPV.

Most fans would agree that Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) is facing his toughest opponent since his second fight against Gennadiy Golovkin in 2018.

Munguia is better than the fighters that Canelo has fought since, and he’s fighting him with Alvarez’s stopping ability has diminished due to age.

This is the type of opponent where Canelo really needs his former knockout ability he’s going to be taking a lot of shots in the fight, and it’s going to be difficult to win a decision if he gasses out in the second half. Munguia has a good engine, and he’ll sweep the second-half rounds if Canelo fades as he’s been doing through many of his fights since 2017.

There’s a real chance that Canelo could lose this fight, and he’d be stuck having to decide whether to continue his career or push for a rematch against the young 27-year-old Munguia.

PPV Event Details

Saturday’s Canelo vs. Munguia event will be shown live on Amazon Prime Video PPV and DAZN PPV. The start starts at 8:00 p.m. ET and the price tag is $89.99, which some boxing fans have complained about.

There would be less complaining if the organizers had packaged the event with a good co-feature bout, but instead, they’ve scrimped, choosing to have Mario Barrios defend his WBC interim welterweight title in a showcase [read: mismatch] against little-known Fabian Maidana, the brother of former 147-lb world champion Marcos Maidana. However, Fabian isn’t a top-tier contender.

Ryder’s Prediction

“Canelo has reached his ceiling but Munguia is there. I don’t think he’ll stop him, but Canelo May stop Munguia,” said John Ryder to Boxing News, giving his thoughts on this Saturday’s fight between undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and challenger Jaime Munguia.

“I don’t think he will because when was the last time Canelo stopped someone? I thinhk Canelo is really on his toes. He’s picked up with his training camp from San Diego to the mountains. Munguia is training in Los Angeles with Freddie Roach.

“The improvements Munguia has made with Roach. The Munguia I saw against Derevyanchenko and the one against me is head and shoulders above,” said Ryder.
