Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya has turned down Devin Haney’s request for a rematch, telling him on his Instagram site that “there will not be a rematch” with Ryan Garcia.
Rematch Hopes Dashed
This news ain’t going to put a smile on Haney’s face, considering he was hoping to get a rematch with Ryan to give him the opportunity to avenge his embarrassing defeat last weekend.
Without that second chance from Kingry, Haney is stuck defending his WBC light welterweight title against his mandatory Sandor Martin next. That fight has financial disaster written all over it and will be filled with many risks for Haney.
Haney posted yesterday that he wants a rematch with Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) at an “agreed weight” for him to “give fans a fair fight.” Ryan beat Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) by a 12-round majority decision, but had come in overweight 3.2 lbs during their weigh-in last Friday.
Haney Blames Weight
Haney played up the weight angle, saying that it had “played a role” in his loss, which is what his promoter Eddie Hearn has been suggesting as well. Fans don’t agree with that belief.
They overwhelmingly see it as Ryan just having too much hand speed and power for Haney in the fight, and better equipped to fight at the highest rungs of the professional level than him. Kingry was machine-gunning Haney with combinations from round one, and him teetering on the verge of a knockout.
In the seventh, the fight arguably should have been stopped by referee Harvey Dock after Ryan knocked Haney down four rounds. He had him looking like a human version of a bowling pin with the way he knocked him over effortlessly.
De La Hoya’s Blunt Message
“Good luck with Eddie [Hearn], but there will not be a rematch. Good luck in your career and good luck with Eddie, a European promoter trying to make it in the US,” said promoter Oscar De La Hoya on Instagram, letting Devin Haney know that he WON’T be getting a rematch with Ryan Garcia after losing to him last Saturday night in New York.
