Canelo-Munguia: The Real Prize is Munguia’s Giant Paycheck

Trainer Robert Garcia sees it as a jackpot cash win for Jaime Munguia just getting picked out by the superstar Canelo Alvarez for Saturday’s fight on May 4th. Forget about the outcome.

The money that Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) will receive, which will be in the millions, will make this fight against Canelo worthwhile for him and his promoters for that sweet payday against Alvarez. Some believe Munguia’s entire career has been carefully orchestrated by his promoters to get the Canelo payday, as they’ve kept him away from dangerous opposition throughout to prevent him from losing.

Robert sees Canelo being victorious on Saturday, but he feels Munguia has got a chance if he can land something big. However, the rule of thumb is Munguia will need to win 9 rounds to earn a decision. If it’s anything less than that, Canelo will get the nod. Unless Munguia knocks Canelo’s head, it’s a given that the superstar wins.

Financial Victory

“He’s a very strong kid, and he’s young, also. I had one of my fighters spar with him before Ryder,” said trainer Robert Garcia to Fighthype about Jaime Munguia. “Canelo is on another level. I think it’s already a win for Munguia getting that fight, Zanfer Promotions, and Golden Boy. That’s a win.” In other words, they’ll be crying all the way to the bank afterward.

Munguia stopped John Ryder in the ninth round last January. In his previous fight, Canelo had hammered Ryder, who took a 12-round beating in May of last year.

Munguia’s promoters picked Ryder as his opponent rather than an unbeaten talent like David Morrell Jr. or David Benavidez is just another example of how they’ve kept him protected to get the Canelo payday.

Munguia would likely be slaughtered by those two fighters, and then all that work that had been done by his promoters would be up in smoke. The Canelo cash grab would have been wrecked.

“If you make it to fight someone like Canelo, you’ve already won. Munguia is going to get the biggest payday of his career, and [promoter] Fernando Beltran is also going to get a chunk of it. Golden Boy is going to get a chunk of it. So, they’ve already won,” said Robert.

“I think Canelo wins. Will Munguia put up some good rounds? Will Munguia have the heart to go and try whatever it takes to win? Yes, he does. I just think Canelo is on a different level and Canelo is going to win. You don’t lose there. You already won.”

“When Mayweather was fighting, everyone had already hit the jackpot because they were going to make the biggest payday of their career. Munguia, there’s a chance. He’s got a good punch. Canelo is already up there in age and had a lot of fights and training camps.

Canelo’s Wear and Tear

“I’m not saying wars because I don’t think Canelo has ever been in a war, but he’s had a lot of training camps, sparring matches, and up and down in weight. All that takes a lot out of your body, especially later on in your career,” said Robert.

Munguia needs to make the most of it because he’s not going to be getting many similar paydays like this one. There’s no one at 168 for Munguia to fight, and he’d have to move up to 175, where he’ll be food for the sharks.
